History of the Club

Football is one of the oldest sport games in Podbrezová. The first written record of this game goes back to the period 1911 – 1913. The first field to play was behind the old galvanizing plant which used to be the former timber storage place. It is interesting to know that the field could have been used to play football only when the Štiavnička saw mill did not have any timber there. Football revival occurred after 1920, when the Slovak laborers brought more advanced techniques of this game from the Hungarian Dyosgyöru. The first insignia was RTJ Podbrezová and organized matches were played under the banner of RTJ. In 1933, after merging with Horna Lehota, matches were played on the field right behind the Endrezzi villa. This field was opened in July 1933 with the game played against the reserve of ŠK Banska Bystrica. The home team won 4:2. The attendance back then was around 400 people. In 1936 Podbrezová advanced its way into the 1st Class of Central Slovakian football league.

The football team is already ranked among stable 1st Football League teams to which the A-team advanced in 1997/1998 season. Third place in the 1999/2000 season has long been A-teams’ the most successful placement in the 2nd League and the football team repeated this success the following season. In the 2007/2008 season the team took 2nd place in the Major league (now the 2nd Division). In addition, in the 2001/2002 season, we also successfully advanced to the semifinal of the Slovak Cup. Promise for the future was advancement of the junior teams to the 1st Slovak League in 2004. Collaboration with the Italian giant, Inter Milan is helping the junior teams since 2002 and the Podbrezova youth football thus became part of the worldwide Inter Campus project.

In the club there were a number of players for whom they were the years in red and black and gray jerseys great launching pad. Marek Bažík became the champion of Slovakia with the team of Zilina, where a former assistant coach Milan Nemec was also playing. In the 2007/2008 season the Zilina jersey belonged to Peter Štývar who was the driver of the team. Quality youth work is also confirmed by Juraj Kucka, current player of AC Sparta Praha and Michal Breznaník, who played for Slovan Bratislava when they won the 2008/2009 Championship and in the year 2009/2010 as the captain of Slovan Bratislava he won the Slovak Cup. Podbrezova raised players who now are playing in the 1st League clubs which is the Premier League in Slovakia for such teams as MSK Ružomberok, Slovan Bratislava and Dukla Banska Bystrica.

In the history of second division clubs the top scorer is Mikuláš Pelegrin, who scored 43 goals.
